Lead Data Scientist

London (Perm)

There are currently three Data Scientists working as consultants to get the initial prototype up and running. You would work collaboratively with the consultants and the senior stakeholders within Product, UX Design, Analytics, Business/Technical Analysts, Project Managers and stakeholders within the partner business.

Job Title:  Lead Data Scientist
Location: City of London
Reports to: Product Director
Remuneration: Competitive

Benefits: Private healthcare, pension scheme, flex benefits, perkbox, discounted gym membership and 25 days annual leave not including bank holidays

Company:

A new merger between a FinTech investor and a FTSE 250 that work within the digital mortgage space. They are building a B2C recommender system that will revolutionise the way in which consumers find and choose a mortgage.

The investor has a track record of helping to create some of the most well-known FinTech organisations in the world. The mortgage firm (partner) are a household name and digital innovator within the sector.

Opportunity:

This is a fantastic opportunity for a Data Scientist to join a high-growth organisation at the cutting edge of their field. You would be one step under C-Level with the realistic opportunity to grow your own team. This would suit a Data Scientist that has delivered statistical models and algorithms that drive similar projects (like recommender systems). You are either a few years into your career and looking to lead a project with the view to becoming a manager or you are highly experienced and just want an extremely good opportunity to join something very interesting.

The Role:

There are currently three Data Scientists working as consultants to get the initial prototype up and running. You would work collaboratively with the consultants and the senior stakeholders within Product, UX Design, Analytics, Business/Technical Analysts, Project Managers and stakeholders within the partner business.

You will need to be innovative, creative and a natural problem-solver. The multiple data sets need to be understood and conceptualised to make them work. Various types of statistical models need to be built to address datasets; Credit, Customer Preferences, Churn, Buying Behaviour and User Journey for example. Algorithms must be developed to make the system function as a recommender; this will be an ongoing test and learn process.

The initial product is due to go live January 2018. There are options for future products (such as a B2B version) to be developed and plenty to keep you busy for the foreseeable future.

It is key that you have worked on machine learning products; this is not a Data Insights role.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, maintain and evolve the statistical model which will drive the recommender system
  • Work closely with stakeholders across the business to identify opportunities and develop efficient algorithmic solutions
  • Generate valuable and actionable insights by utilising advanced statistical techniques and data mining approaches to improve decision making
  • Build well maintained models that influence programmatic decision making and develop machine learning opportunities to improve the models
  • Solve problems through leveraging good data, quantitative analysis, machine learning, statistical learning, mathematical modelling etc
  • Prototype and build high quality data products
  • Communicate technical concepts and analysis to a wide audience; both internal and external stakeholders/partners

Skills and requirements:

  • Background in mathematics & statistics (quantitative background, mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics or equivalent quantitative field.)
  • Experience working on recommender systems (advantageous)
  • Strong capability in advanced statistics for example; multiple regression, general linear models, Monte Carlo simulation, clustering (e.g. K-means) and machine learning techniques
  • A/B and multivariate testing
  • Predictive analytics and Bayesian inference
  • Working knowledge and understanding of optimisation methods such as stochastic gradient descent
  • Extensive experience with quantitative methods to solving analytic problems
  • Able to translate business problems to analytic problems
  • Design, implement, evaluate, and monitor quantitative solutions
  • Present results of analyses to business units; explain technical and statistical concepts to non-technical associates and clients.
  • Comfortable analysing and manipulating large data sets from multiple sources
  • Strong skills concerning visual communication of information
  • Recommended tools: R, Python, SQL, C++, Javascript/D3 etc
